Our approach and principles
All nonprofit organizations based in the 29 Greater Hartford towns we serve can apply for funding opportunities. Discover what we look for in applicants, and what applicants can expect from the grantmaking process with Greater Hartford Gives.
What we consider
- Values alignment: Is the organization aligned with our mission and core values?
- Equity: Are the organization’s board and staff reflective of the community they serve? Does the organization demonstrate how services and programs will be accessible to people from populations disproportionally impacted by disparities?
- Community engagement: Does the organization consult and involve the people it serves in building and implementing solutions?
- Demonstrated need: Are other organizations doing this work and is there an unmet gap in services among providers?
- Outcome driven: Is there a plan for how organizational and project goals will be achieved—and how the organization will monitor/optimize impact?
- Systemic and coordinated strategy: Does the request reflect an understanding of structural issues and support improved coordination across multiple systems to address them?
- Collaboration: Has the organization considered other actors in this space, and is there evidence of prior effective collaborative efforts?
- Capacity: Does the organization have the institutional capacity, including qualified staff/volunteers, board leadership, and stable finances to undertake the proposed effort?
- Budget: Is the budget for the proposed efforts realistic and cost-effective?
- Sustainability: Has a long-term funding plan been developed? Does the work advance a permanent change that eliminates the need for this work in the future?

How to apply for funding
Our grant application process is a partnership. Organizations seeking funding can submit an inquiry through our online grant portal to determine how your organization’s proposed work aligns with our strategic priorities. After submission, a member of our Community Impact team will contact you to discuss and determine next steps.
If you prefer to have a conversation, or would like help from our staff to submit your inquiry, email applications@hfpg.org.
