John Bell and Lawrence “Larry” Thornton, both World War II veterans, shared a longtime friendship and a passion for their alma mater, Hampton University, in Virginia. In 1992, this scholarship fund was created to honor John Bell, with Larry serving as the fund’s committee chairman. With Larry’s passing in 2005, it was only natural that their families and many friends add Larry’s name to the fund, which continues to help Hartford area students attending Hampton University.
