Dorothy Hofmann was a dedicated teacher with a deep knowledge of her field of English and English Literature. Miss Hofmann had a love of learning that she sought to instill in her students, and a strong presence in the classroom where she expected the full attention of the students. She also was a woman of great courage and determination. Although she was stricken by multiple sclerosis later in her adult life, she carried on her activities and interests with remarkable fortitude and enthusiasm and was an inspiration to her many friends and associates.
Her deep and abiding interest in education and her pride in both Bulkeley High School, where she taught for most of her career, and Pembroke College in Brown University, her alma mater, led her to create a scholarship fund through her estate. She wanted to give female students the same opportunity that she had, to be able to pursue a college education.
