The Somers Community Fund at Greater Hartford Gives is now accepting grant proposals! Please review our request for proposal below for guidelines and instructions.  Applications will be accepted through July 31st.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Somers Community Fund Committee is seeking new voices!

Applications to volunteer as a committee member are being accepted now! 

Requirements to Apply: 

Candidates for elected office, elected officials, and their immediate family members may not serve on a committee.

Grant Awards

Through its 2025 grant cycle, the Somers Community Fund at Greater Hartford Gives proudly supported 9 organizations making a difference in the lives of Somers residents.

The 2025 grants recommended for funding and awarded includes:

Generation Power CT:  $7,140 To support Utility and Energy Assistance for Somers residents

Scantic River Watershed Association, Inc.:  $2,569 To support the Scantic River Watershed Team

Somers CT Music Patrons:  $6,500 To support Somers Music Ensemble Performance & Workshops

Somers Department of Veterans Affairs:  $10,000 To support the creation of the Veterans Memorial Park and Healing Garden

Somers Public School:  $8,000 To Support STEM Together Through Family STEM Nights

Somers SafeGrad:  $750 To support SafeGrad Graduation Night 2026

Somers Senior Center:  $3,200 To support the Avoiding Senior Isolation & Loneliness project

Somers Volunteer Fire Department Association, Inc.:  $8,000 To support the purchase of a Utility Task Vehicle

Town of Somers:  $7,000 To support the relocation of the Teen Center

Past Grant Recipients

In past years, the Somers Community Fund at Greater Hartford Gives supported the following organizations: 

Scantic River Watershed Association ($4,960) – to support an afterschool team and add a Somers BioBlitz day so more youth can participate and provide environmental testing of the Scantic River.

Somers Elementary School ($5,000) to expand an after-school technology program that focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and Robotics Maker Space.

Somers Cooperative Preschool  ($1,500)- to fund improvements to Indoor and Outdoor materials for preschoolers.

Somers SafeGrad ($750) to provide a safe, alcohol-free event on graduation night.

Somers Senior Center ($4,000) to fund Activities and Classes  to reduce loneliness and social isolation to Seniors.

Old Post Road Orchestra ($2,000) to support Somers citizens that are musicians to join two community bands.

Scantic River Watershed Association ($5,723) – to support an expansion and continuation of the “Scantic Stream Team” project which provides a hands-on experiential activity for those students interested in environmental science, field-based-science, and/or citizen science.  It also provides water monitoring of the Scantic River.

Somers Elementary School ($9,000) to hold an after-school technology program that focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) opportunities such as coding, robotics, and maker mindset activities.   

Somers Department of Veterans Affairs  ($6,000)- to fund outreach and support of Somers Veterans.   

Somers Fire Department  ($4,500)- to expand public access AED program by locating additional AEDs, along with basic first aid and stop-the-bleed kits, in more public parks. The request also includes new infant CPR manikins to aid in public CPR/First Aid training.

Somers SafeGrad ($750) to provide a safe, alcohol free event on graduation night for the 2023 senior class of Somers High School.

Somers Village Players ($5,900) to produce a staged production in May 2024.

Scantic River Watershed Association ($5493.44) to support a hands-on experiential activity for those students interested in environmental science, field-based-science, and/or citizen science.

Somers Fire Department  ($3000)- to purchase heated AED cabinets to install public access Automated External Defibrillators ‘s at Field Road Park and the Field behind the Somers Town Hall. 

Somers Little League ($10,000) to install a well and sprinkler system to allow irrigation of the playing fields and restore them back to safe playing conditions for the Somers Little League program.

Somers Recreation Department ($7000) to install a Disc Golf Course at Field Road Park. 

Somers SafeGrad ($2500) to provide a safe, alcohol free event on graduation night for the 2023 senior class of Somers High School.

Somers Youth Services ($5000) to purchase games and equipment for the new youth after school drop-in center.

Junior Achievement of Southwest New England Inc. ($4,500) – to support the Economic Empowerment program.

Somers Community Beautification Org. Inc. ($500) – to support purchase of perennial plants and shrubs for planting around Somers.

Somers Fire Department ($7,500) – to support the mental health first aid for first responders program.

Somers Recreation Department ($6,000) – to support the Outdoor Adventures program.

UR Community Cares Inc. ($1,600) – to support the UR Community Cares in Somers.

Contribute to the Community Fund that supports projects that are improving the lives of residents in Somers.
